HAVE YOU EVER WORKED OR CONTRACTED FOR UNITEDLEX? IF SO, YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION MAY HAVE BEEN STOLEN AND PUT ON THE DARK WEB

UnitedLex Corporation (“ULX” or “United Lex”) specializes in advanced, tech-enhanced litigation support, such as consulting and case management for corporate clients in business litigation. The company was founded in 2006 and is headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, with support offices in Atlanta, New York, California, and Texas, as well as abroad, and has certainly retained some number of remote workers and independent contractors. Per its website, UnitedLex has around 3,000 employees.

Recently, websites that track data breaches announced evidence of a breach at UnitedLex (databreaches.net). These announcements came in early April; however, as depicted on databreaches.net, it seems that root folders, themselves containing any number of subfiles, from the apparent hack of UnitedLex were uploaded to the Dark Web in early March:

UnitedLex didn’t announce the data breach within thirty days—rather, the hack became public because personal information stolen during the attack was seemingly being auctioned on the Dark Web. UnitedLex (UnitedLex Data Security) had noted high-profile hacks at major companies, remarking that it was “striking” that many of these businesses were spending millions of dollars on cybersecurity.

As is evident in the above, the root folders placed on the Dark Web included ones labeled “hr,” “shr,” and “contracts.” We presume that “hr” stands for human resources and that “contracts” may include contracts with subcontractors or other vendors. Thus, the personal information, which apparently included Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, cell phone numbers, etc., for any number of employees, former employees, and contractors retained by UnitedLex may have been posted on the Dark Web as early as March of 2023. And, in some cases, the hacker took personal information and filed fraudulent tax returns, in an attempt to receive refunds directly.

Our firm filed a class action lawsuit in Jackson County, Missouri on May 24, 2023 (Adam Behrendt, on behalf of himself and all others similarly situated v. UnitedLex Corporation). Our investigation into this matter continues.

It seems likely that some number of employees, former employees, and contractors who did business with UnitedLex may have had their personal information compromised.

Did you ever work for UnitedLex? Have you experienced warning signs of identity theft, such as fake tax filings, fraudulent bank-account charges, and unusual personal text messages purporting to come from upper-level management at UnitedLex?
